According to multiple sources; Unemployment Insurance fraud is currently taking on a global and local threat. As reported by KrebsOnSecurity, allegedly there is a huge Nigerian scam syndicate targeting multiple states.
The high amount of fraud, which is a percentage of the overall claims comes when many states have failed to hire the people that are on unemployment to process claims, answer calls and work administrative duties, even from home. This would lessen the congestion at the call centers and expedite processing of claims. Shutting down and requiring identity documents for claimants, of individuals who have been compliant as a spot check or everyone, seems like a failure of leadership at the State level. This should have been done at the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis, not when businesses are not reopening.
The U.S. government has reported that there are more then 36 million people on unemployment and the Treasury Department states that unemployment programs delivered $48 billion in payments in April 2020.
